Patti Smith came thru Portland this week and I was lucky enough to attend her book reading for Just Kids at the Baghdad Theater. It was the most awesome and truly, inspiring night ever. The kind of night that gives you tingles. She is so genuine and oh my god, I’d love to live a life like hers.

A short film for Cavern Collection.

Since doing design work for a fragrance company as my day job, I’ve been paying closer attention to other brands out there. Honestly, I’m not really a perfume kind of girl, but I’m absolutely loving these two – Olo’s Nationale and Diptyque’s Tam Dao. Olo is a local fragrance line carried at Nationale, each scent is hand-blended by Heather in limited-edition batches. I love the names she’s chosen, the simple labels and sweet, little vials. And, the other fragrance that I cannot get out of mind since trying it is Diptyque’s Tam Dao. I haven’t splurged yet to purchase this made-for-me scent, but I’m seriously considering it. I tried it on at Blackbird, an awesome shop in Seattle, and afterwards kept smelling my wrist every 30 seconds. And, the artwork for Diptyque is just beautiful.

I’ll be donating 10% of sales (until 02/14) to Architecture for Humanity in an effort to help Haiti. Also, free shipping now in the shop.

I went to Holocene lastnight to watch Valerie and her Week of Wonders, a trippy and gorgeous vampire film from the 70s, with live music from local bands Nurses, The Gulls and The Slaves. Crazy awesome.

Remembering when my letterpress and typography teacher had me kern metal type with slivers of paper and copper, and measure the baselines of type down to the point so they matched the verso page, and rebinding books because I made granny knots instead of square knots…

The top one is made up of my ink drawings. I pulled inspiration from old illustration books like Cabinet of Natural Curiosities. And, the bottom one is layered blots of watercolors (it’s much larger than shown). I was sort of thinking about printing the top one on fabric and selling 1/2 yard sections, so let me know if that would interest you! These were really rad to make, hopefully I’ll be able to make a few more patterns in the new year. Also, please check out my shop!

I spend too much time on flickr, here’s some of my faves…

This morning I wrapped up a few pairs of the Traces earrings to give as gifts. These are a limited-edition of 50. Completely handmade – it was a long process of drawing, making prototypes, hand silkscreening, cutting leather, punching holes and adding the earwires. My dining room table was buried with art supplies for soooo long, it’s nice to have it back.

Our hearts are so vulnerable, and we’re so forgiving towards fuck-ups just to be loved back, however short-lived it may be. But sad moments in life, make us grow and experience more. At least, that’s what I’m telling myself. Maybe it’s the wine talking, but it’s real and it’s what’s happening.

I hung out with Katy and Keegan for a bit the other day, as they helped me print part of my project. Getting closer. Deadline is December 1st. I’ll be adding an email subscription here pretty soon too, if you’re interested.

I’m soooooo busy. Trying to breath and stay afloat in life right now, but sometimes I feel just like this.

It truly was an amazing experience and a really great crowd that came to support this event! I loved everything in Hazel Cox’s space – especially that braided rope rug. Chelsea and I checked out the Sword + Fern space twice to listen to The Lovers and ogle at all the gorgeous jewelry – so, so awesome!

Content, experience independent fashion

Okay, this is a month away, but I really can’t wait. 35 local, independent fashion designers will display their work on the 2nd floor of the Ace Hotel. 28 rooms to wander, live music, art and video installations.

I’m swamped – my day job, my own projects and trying to soak up the last bits of Summer before it passes. I’ve been listening to Inside Voices non-stop, a local band that I recently checked out.

Catching up on a few blogs this morning and came across Chelsea’s post about Liberty of London – one of my most, favorite ever, I-wanna-work-here-so-much design house. The photo above is their Betsy print.

Just found the beautiful work of Lauren Nassef thru Book by its Cover and read this terrible, terrible story of how at least 32 of her illustrations were stolen by Samantha Beeston (who has now taken her website down). Not cool, bad karma is coming to that girl. Read more about it here.

I keep going back to Cavern for inspiration.

This looks good, I really like Jason Schwartzman.

Partners & Spade, an awesome project to keep an eye on – work studio during the week and a storefront on the weekends. The storefront is revolving collections of artwork, found objects and ideas curated by Andy Spade and Anthony Sperdutti as well as guest collaborators such as Maira Kalman and Mike Mills (!!!).

This should be lots of fun.

I’m looking forward to Benoît Pioulard, Menomena, Deelay Ceelay, Laura Gibson…and lots of others too, there’s a really great line-up this year!

I went to Fringe and picked up these curtains for my bedroom. I like ‘em, especially when the light pools thru them.

The ladies behind Olio United always amaze me. I’m loving the Makermade series they’ve launched recently – so awesome!

I came across Dust thru a friend and can’t wait to see more from this local Portland line. Each piece is one-of-a-kind made by collaging textures, found materials and hand dyed fabrics. Very beautiful styling.
