It will be quiet around here for a little while. I’m healing up from a bike accident and taking some time away.
It’s always the things that happen in mere seconds that can be the scariest.

I needed an afternoon to myself. So, I stopped what I was doing Friday, grabbed a coffee at my favorite café, then I wandered into Monograph Bookwerks – a beautifully curated shop in the northeast ‘hood of Portland. And, I picked up this book…

During the 1970s, Dieter Roth published a series of ads in a Swiss newspaper. The content of this series – disturbing, poetic and aggressive. This is the first complete publication of Roth’s ads, previously only published as artist’s books.

So I’ve been sick for the past two weeks and I think I’ve mixed every concoction there is to get better. I can’t wait to try this ginger syrup that I found via the Ace. It’s produced in small batches, and comes in little, hand-numbered bottles. It’ll be perfect for gin + tonics too.

Patti Smith came thru Portland this week and I was lucky enough to attend her book reading for Just Kids at the Baghdad Theater. It was the most awesome and truly, inspiring night ever. The kind of night that gives you tingles. She is so genuine and oh my god, I’d love to live a life like hers.

Remembering when my letterpress and typography teacher had me kern metal type with slivers of paper and copper, and measure the baselines of type down to the point so they matched the verso page, and rebinding books because I made granny knots instead of square knots…

It truly was an amazing experience and a really great crowd that came to support this event! I loved everything in Hazel Cox’s space – especially that braided rope rug. Chelsea and I checked out the Sword + Fern space twice to listen to The Lovers and ogle at all the gorgeous jewelry – so, so awesome!

Doing a bit of research for my project and came across these beautiful textile swatches – a sampling of shibori and resist-dyeing techniques.

I’m always drawn to photos with rich patterns that have a dark, vintage look to them. Top is Lina Scheynius – all of her photos are eerily gorgeous. Bottom left is Lisa Parks and the right is Elisabeth Dunker.

Can’t wait to see more from Publication Studio, a new-to-me local studio that makes small editions of perfectbound books, hosts gatherings and conversations all housed at The Cleaners in the Ace Hotel. I have an eternal soft spot for words and paper.

Catching up on a few blogs this morning and came across Chelsea’s post about Liberty of London – one of my most, favorite ever, I-wanna-work-here-so-much design house. The photo above is their Betsy print.

Just found the beautiful work of Lauren Nassef thru Book by its Cover and read this terrible, terrible story of how at least 32 of her illustrations were stolen by Samantha Beeston (who has now taken her website down). Not cool, bad karma is coming to that girl. Read more about it here.

I keep going back to Cavern for inspiration.

Partners & Spade, an awesome project to keep an eye on – work studio during the week and a storefront on the weekends. The storefront is revolving collections of artwork, found objects and ideas curated by Andy Spade and Anthony Sperdutti as well as guest collaborators such as Maira Kalman and Mike Mills (!!!).

I went to Fringe and picked up these curtains for my bedroom. I like ‘em, especially when the light pools thru them.

I’ve been reading more local blogs lately and one that I’m liking a lot is Urban Weeds – a style blog on Portland.

The ladies behind Olio United always amaze me. I’m loving the Makermade series they’ve launched recently – so awesome!

I came across Dust thru a friend and can’t wait to see more from this local Portland line. Each piece is one-of-a-kind made by collaging textures, found materials and hand dyed fabrics. Very beautiful styling.

I’m going to go check out this show at the Together Gallery before it closes. I love Nigel Peake’s work and fell instantly for Julie Morstad’s work. Lovely.

Stumbled upon this project the other night, a limited-edition photography zine based in Milan that comes out every season. I just wish it was closer to home so I could check out the art openings. Wait, I wish I was there.

As I was doing research for a project yesterday, I stumbled across Bruce Rogers’ work and I remembered this mark that I’ve loved for so long, found in one of my letterpress books.
Rogers was a part of the private press movement as well as one of the original members of The Typophiles. He designed numerous book covers like this one that I just love.

My birthday is coming you know, well, not really – in November. Not too sure I can wait though!

I’ve been on the look-out for a record player, I’ve been eyeing a few but am still not too sure about which one. Luckily we have a few awesome record shops here in Portland that I may swing by for advice and to see if they have any Margo Guryan records. She’s been on repeat every morning.
